Zero Emission, Energy Efficient Protein Production

Aanleiding
The world population will reach 9.6 billion by 2050 (2.2bn increase from 2016). Current food production needs to almost double. Protein production has to grow by c.50% (c.265m tonnes). Energy, land and water are scarce. Current production methods are unable to cope with the growth due to the limited capacity of the planet. The in-sect industry is well positioned to deliver a significant contribution to future protein supply. Insects offer an oppor-tunity to merge traditional knowledge and modern science in both developed and developing countries.


Doelstelling
Protix is the first company worldwide to develop an insect farming technology at the scale needed to meet this challenge. The potential this technology offers is huge. Waste streams become a source of protein and other nu-trients that we can use to feed livestock (and –later on- humans) on a global scale. By now, we have implemented and optimized our technology in a pilot factory, proving the viability of our concepts. The next step is to substantiate the technical and economic potential on a demonstration scale.

Korte omschrijving
Protix was initiated in 2009 to produce high quality insect derived nutrients. Our basis is a controllable, scalable and stable insect breeding and processing technology to produce proteins and lipids from low-grade waste streams. This process has now been tested and proven.

Resultaat
ZE3PP is the instantiation of a fully operational, economic and ecological sustainable large-scale protein produc-tion facility (yearly production of 34.000 tons) with a minimized footprint in terms of energy use and CO2 emission. Furthermore, ZE3PP results in a local ecosystem for the industrial and agricultural production of proteins, supply-ing the Dutch agricultural sector with an alternative business model with much better ecological, economic and societal characteristics. We aim to replace high-grade animal proteins used in veterinarian pet foods (such as hy-drolyzed fishmeal, lamb, duck and rabbit), high-end pet foods (chicken, beef) and soon aquaculture (fishmeal).
Realising ZE3PP results in NL energy use reduction and CO2 emission reduction in comparison to traditional protein production (30-65 % energy use and 85%-95% CO2 eq relative to chicken, pork or beef production).
