Using Subsea Power Cable as sensor for Cable Burial Depth Detection

Aanleiding
JIP SENSE is defined in 5 stages. Stage 1 will set the research framework and will set the depth of burial framework. Stage 2 will use modelling and (where available) real-data sets to gain insight in the practicality of monitoring burial-depth and to quantify the uncertainty in burial-depth estimation that can be obtained with each single-sense approach. The laboratory experiment of Stage 3 serves to assess whether application of the depth of burial framework indeed results in a decrease of uncertainty in burial-depth estimate when compared to the single-sense methods. In Stage 4 the framework will be further matured by testing it on real-world scenarios during a field scale application. The identification of weaknesses and strengths of each single-sense method informs the strategies to combine the methods to create a framework which is finalized in Stage 5 with the purpose to reduce uncertainty in burial-depth estimation.

Doelstelling
This project will develop a framework to monitor the burial depth of subsea cable networks for future use by industry to act in time and prevent cable damage, which will reduce costs and increase reliability of power supply and telecommunication from offshore windfarms. We aim to use the fiber optic cable encapsulated in the subsea cables as a source of data to develop a framework to detect the burial depth of the cable. As a follow-up on the JIP CALM, JIP SENSE aims to further develop DTS (distributed temperature sensors) and DAS (distributed acoustic sensors) and expand the research scope to include DSS (distributed strain sensors) and FOSS (Fiber Optic Shape Sensing) technology in a combined manner. With this new approach we aim to demonstrate that the multi-sense approach to offshore subsea cable burial depth monitoring provides a higher accuracy on the depth positioning of the cable. This approach could be implemented as a new trigger system to provide early warnings on shallow buried or exposed cables.
