Substitution of marine diesel fuel by LNG

Publieke samenvatting / Public summary

Aanleiding
Today, the usage of gas as bunker fuel is not widely adopted. Main reasons being the intrinsically linked issues of i) lack of LNG distribution infrastructure and ii) lack of small scale LNG demand (“the chicken and the egg situation”). AV is a strong believer of this new marine fuel, as it is already today operating a small scale LNG carrier that is using LNG as fuel and is in the process of newbuilding two new LNG carriers. LNG is considered to be the most economic and environmentally friendly marine fuel available.

Doelstelling
To create a cleaner shipping operation and to initiate the development of the small scale LNG market and infrastructure.

Korte omschrijving
This pilot project concerns the retrofit of an existing MDO single fuel medium speed MAK 6M25 2000 kW main engine on the ship Coral Carbonic. The retrofit will enable dual fuel propulsion, including LNG as its main fuel. A retrofit on such a seagoing ship has not been performed before and is subject to stringent Class rules. Next to the retrofit of the main engine, LNG bunker tanks and a fuel gas supply system will be installed.
