SEAHORSE
Strengthening the Environment through the Advanced production of Hydrogen Offshore for Reoxygenation
Publieke samenvatting / Public summary
Aanleiding
Half of the world's oxygen is produced by the sea, but these levels of oxygen are dropping drastically. Scientists expect that the environmental impact might be even larger than from ocean acidification or heat waves. This is because the process of deoxygenation of sea waters is linked to biodiversity loss, which in turn affects human health. So how can we stop this?
Doelstelling
One potential solution to mitigate the effects is offered by the energy transition. With the production of hydrogen, oxygen is produced. In this project we look into the feasibility of using this oxygen to mitigate the impact of deoxygenation.
Korte omschrijving
During this pilot project we will research technical aspects of oxygen production, timing of the problem, and amounts of oxygen needed, as well as the impact on the North Sea ecosystem.
