SDG elimination of steam
SD Guthrie - Steamless Solutions for Sustainable Oil Refining
Publieke samenvatting / Public summary
Aanleiding
SD Guthrie International Zwijndrecht Refinery B.V. (hereafter: SD) is, as part of SD Guthrie International Bhd, dedicated to advancing sustainability and committed to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across their value chain by 2050. With the highest operational GHG emissions intensity across all SD facilities, the multi-oil manufacturing company's refinery in Zwijndrecht is one of the key priorities in reaching this objective. The emissions are primarily Scope 1 emissions, a large part of which stems from steam production. To maintain the plant-based oil in its liquid state, it is essential to provide heat throughout various stages of the process, including refining, tank storage, and pipeline transportation. This heating is currently achieved using steam generated from natural gas combustion.
Doelstelling
To reduce the scope 1 emissions and thereby improving the sustainability of SD, this project will focus on steam elimination. By reducing steam consumption, natural gas consumption will decrease. The carbon emissions resulting from the production process will eventually decrease as well.
Korte omschrijving
To achieve steam reduction, various changes will be made throughout the entire process, from refining to storage. A heat recovery system will be installed to capture waste heat from different process steps and reintegrate it into nearly all stages of the refinery process. For transportation between different process steps, where recovered heat cannot be applied, other changes will be necessary. Currently, steam tracing is used to heat the pipelines, which will be converted to electric tracing to eliminate steam use in this part of the process. Eventually, the recovered heat will also be applied directly to the storage tanks.
Resultaat
As part of this project, an annual reduction of 64.601 GJ of steam will be achieved, leading to an annual reduction of 3.005.464 Nm3 of natural gas. Due to the decrease in steam usage, some processes will transition from steam tracing to electric tracing, resulting in an annual increase in energy consumption of 2.466 MWh. Ultimately, the steam elimination project will reduce CO2 emissions by 4.631.522 kg annually.
