PARSEC

PV And Recycling for leadfree Solar panels: Economy & Circularity

Publieke samenvatting / Public summary

Aanleiding
In order to allow full recycling of all solar panel components, the design of solar panels needs to be adapted such that all components can be harvested in one piece without contamination. The project partners have developed a 'smart encapsulant' which allows this, with corresponding recycling process on small scale demo panels.

Doelstelling
The aim of project PARSEC is to scale up the material and solar panel production to full size panels, and to further develop the backsheet and lead-free interconnect material to allow full recycling of all components on industrial scale. This fits with the TKI UE programs focussing on material development to allow for circularity and full material re-use.

Korte omschrijving
In the project ECN.TNO will focus on the development of the backsheet and Mat-tech will further develop lead free interconnection material which can be harvested at end-of-life. The integration of the materials in the solar panel manufacturing process will first be done at the ECN.TNO lab (small scale and full size), and is then transferred to the production line at Exasun, where 12 full size panels will be produced. DSM will take care of the full size production of the smart encapsulant and novel backsheet. Extensive climate chamber testing and weathering tests will be done (ECN.TNO and DSM) in order to discover potential failures. ECN.TNO will scale up the process for disassembly of the solar panels. Exasun and ECN.TNO will execute outdoor performance measurements at the ABN-AMRO CIRCL building in Amsterdam.

Resultaat
PARSEC will result in a set of materials which allow full recycling of solar panels, as well as in the production process of such panels and test results of accelerated reliability testing, at least up to 2 times the IEC requirements. PARSEC will also result in a manual for disassembly of full size panels.
