Propaan / Butaan warmtepomp Kuikenbroederij Van Hulst

Publieke samenvatting / Public summary

Looptijd

Hatching chicks with heat pumps

Heat pumps are potentially an energy efficient alternative for heating processes with gas and steam boilers and water boilers throughout the industry, from SMEs to large chemical and paper plants, and also for cooling. With the growing expertise of suppliers and installers in dwellings and utility buildings, more industrial (large) consumers become interested in the application of heat pumps tailored to their local situation. Many companies can thus become ‘gasless’.

The project

At the time that Van Hulst BV's Kuikenbroederij (chicks hatchery) was in the process of replacing the old heat boilers on natural gas, supplier Servex was just about to develop and test a two-stage compression heat pump on propane and butane. Partly due to the RVO’s DEI-subsidy, the heat pump installation proved viable for the company, which breeds about a million chickens per week.

For whom

The demonstration project at Van Hulst deserves a follow-up by medium-sized companies with a considerable heat demand, around 100 kW to a few MW. Combination with simultaneous cooling of other processes simplifies the installation of heat pumps and reduces the pay-back time.

What's new?

Heat pumps for SMEs are hot, but not yet common. Heat pumps on 'natural' refrigerants such as butane and propane are completely new, in this case adapted to the situation at Van Hulst: a desired water temperature of 80°C for the heating of the incubators and with the guarantee that the system also works on outside air down to -20°C. At higher air temperatures, the performance of the system increases to a COP of 4.5. Van Hulst has a system of three parallel heat pumps, which increases the reliability of the system. One heat pump is also suitable for cooling, and together they are prepared for an upcoming expansion.

The heat pumps as applied in the utility and residential construction are often provided with harmful greenhouse gases. The EU Fluorocarbon Regulation reduces the use of these HFCs by 80% until 2030. For SMEs, investing in heat pumps with HFCs is therefore not an option.

Key points of research

The preparation process of the commercial application was mainly focused on the optimal operation and high reliability of the system. In addition, it was important to avoid synthetic working fluids.

Among other things, the recently published KNVvK work instructions make the use of propane and butane increasingly common. Safety is not an issue when working according to the regulations.

Saving in this project

The heat pump installation saves all natural gas that the old heat boilers used. Meanwhile electricity consumption is increasing, which requires an increase of the electricity supply capacity (transformer) by about 30%. Over the entire year, the heat pump should save at least 20% energy and over 50% energy costs compared to the current gas-fired central heating boilers, which means that the investment in the installation is recouped in five years.

Broad application

A realistic perspective for this application in SMEs is a number of 5000 smaller heat pumps (up to 100 kW) and up to 500 large heat pumps per year, which is 1% of the theoretical potential. The potential savings of this is 0.4 PJ / year.

Duration

The project has been running since 2017 and expires in mid-2018.

Next steps

Supplier Servex is already approaching new markets, such as meat processing, mushroom cultivation, et cetera. The heat pumps on butane and propane are particularly suitable for companies with simultaneous  cooling, because the waste heat can then be used as input for the heat pump.
