Plastic to Chemicals Kampen

Publieke samenvatting / Public summary

Aanleiding
Plastic waste is a rapidly increasing problem in our modern world. Although many techniques exist to recycle plastic waste, still a large amount of plastics end up in incineration plants, in dump sites and even in nature. The majority of the plastic waste that is recycled, is recycled mechanically. However, mechanical recycling has its limitations as it results in downcycling leading to the quality of the recyclate getting lower and lower. Besides the quality is insufficient to replace virgin plastic on a large scale. Chemical recycling as a supplement to mechanical recycling system could provide a solution. An important reason being that chemical recycling is better suited to process contaminated, mixed waste streams. This prevents a large part of the plastic waste from having to be incinerated or downcycled in low quality products otherwise.

Doelstelling
PTC Kampen seeks to build an installation that can process end of life plastics into valuable chemical building blocks thereby significantly increasing the recyclability of plastic waste streams that exist in The Netherlands. In other words, the installation enables the reuse of plastic waste for useful applications including products, materials and compounds that can be used for their original purpose or for a different purpose.

Korte omschrijving
With the planned installation PTC Kampen can recover hydrocarbons from various plastic waste streams (preferably polyolefin waste, but also crude oil-based organic liquids) by means of thermolytic cracking in a cracking reactor. The benefit of the installation is that the use of catalysts in the cracking step can be avoided, as the reaction is driven by heat that induces thermolysis of the feedstock. Via this process, the plastic waste that is fed to the installation is converted into reusable hydrocarbons.

Resultaat
PTC Kampen aspires to build a completely new factory where the aforementioned process can be carried out. With the foreseen plant, a net amount of 62.857 ton of feedstock (plastic waste) can be recycled annually. Taking into consideration sorting, drying and cleaning, this amounts to 35,200 ton of processed plastic per year. Several types of plastics are to be processed by the plant such as: ? PE/PP/PB ? PS/EPS With development of the factory, the goal is to reach an annual output of 28,6 million liters of recycled product oil and 4 million liters of recycled light hydrocarbons. Leading to a 5-year CO2 emission reduction of 77.000 ton CO2-eq.
