Membraanscheiding in agressieve milieus

Membrane separation in aggressive environments

The projects

As an economical alternative to the common chemical separation processes by distillation columns, separation with membranes is attractive, because then a large part of the heating for distillation can be omitted. The industry is working on these alternatives on various routes. The projects deal with nanofiltration by ceramic membranes of substances in aggressive solvents, against which the more common polymeric membranes are not resistant.

For whom

The ceramic membranes under development are particularly suitable for separation of emulsions in aggressive, solvents such as toluene, also at relatively high pressures. Such separation processes take place in the chemical industry.

What's new?

This separation involves a class of ceramic membranes with nanopores on which and in which small organic polymers (for example silicones such as PDMS) are applied. The method of chemically binding an organic molecule in a nanopore of a ceramic membrane is new. These organic molecules are tailored to give the pores precisely the right structure and chemical properties to separate substances from the emulsion.

Key points of research

In this project, more fundamental research is being conducted into the development of specific organic groups and to chemically bind them in the ceramic pores. In addition, attention is paid to the characterization of the structure of these ceramic membranes and to finding a link between the structure and its effect in the separation of mixtures. This includes modeling the transport flows in the membrane.

Broader application

Raw estimates show that nanofiltration membranes with a moderate penetration rate of 10 to 20% in all relevant processes in the Dutch chemical industry can yield a potential saving of 2 to 8 PJ per year. In the world that is expectedly about 240 PJ.

Duration

Duration: 01-09-2015 - 01-09-1019. An earlier project was completed in 2014.

The next step

Based on the results of the project with specific substances that was concluded in 2014, negotiations are currently underway with companies for the application of the process in an industrial scale demonstration, starting in a few years. In addition, the development of new materials for other emulsions takes place at a more fundamental level. Commercial application of these materials will take longer, about five to ten years.
