Green Hydrogen Firing Low NOx Gas Turbine

Publieke samenvatting / Public summary

Aanleiding
At the multi-client site of GETEC in Emmen, GETEC (legally Emmtec Services B.V.) provides electricity, steam, heat and other utilities like water and support services to a broad array of industry partners. Large chemical engineering, production, and recycling companies are located at this site. In a pursuit to reduce its overall energy consumption level and the accompanying carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions, GETEC continuously innovates and explores new and advanced energy solutions for self and on-site partners to significantly contribute to both national and European climate goals and to foster and accelerate the adoption of green energy sources for companies located on its site. Currently, GETEC has deployed two large scale gas turbines for producing and supplying heat and electricity required for the production processes of the large chemical firms.

Doelstelling
Since completely reestablishing its entire energy infrastructure is not only time consuming but also extremely expensive, GETEC aims to demonstrate the ability to 'retrofit' its current frame 5 gas turbines based on a new and innovative technology owned by Thomassen Energy B.V. (in succession of a previous, successfully completed DEI+ pilot application with reference number DEI120081). More specifically, GETEC and Thomassen together want to demonstrate the ability to use 100% green and renewable hydrogen, as an input fuel for its frame 5 (Fr5) gas turbines for producing both heat and power. This way, GETEC aims to achieve a significantly lower carbon footprint by reducing its overall dependency on natural gas (and that of its on-site partners), while still being able to (re)use a large part of the existing energy infrastructure already in place for the combustion of natural gas. In short, the aim of this project is to significantly reduce the NOx emissions while also substantially lowering the overall CO2 and GHG emissions at the GETEC park in Emmen by retrofitting the current frame 5 gas turbine to be suitable for hydrogen operation.

Korte omschrijving
Specific activities set out in this Fr5 DEI+-project include investing in and incorporating the FlameSheet™ combustion system of Thomassen in the current gas turbine infrastructure present at GETEC and to demonstrate the ability of 100% green and renewable hydrogen in a real frame 5 gas turbine installed at the GETEC campus for demonstration purposes. Via this demonstration project, the complete gas turbine system, including controls, gas mixing skids and other auxiliaries will be developed and installed to demonstrate that the FlameSheet™ technology, in cooperation with the already deployed frame 5 gas turbine, is able to operate on 100% green and renewable hydrogen in a full-scale, industrial setting.

Resultaat
Following from a successful demonstration of the retrofitting of its existing frame 5 gas turbine to be able to operate on 100% green and renewable hydrogen, GETEC aims to reduce its overall CO2 emissions by 105.000 ton annually (based on 8.000 operational hours per year). Following a successful demonstration of the FlameSheet™ technology in this project, the technology could be further expanded to any type of gas combustion turbine worldwide to achieve even greater carbon footprint reductions (230.000 and 600.000 ton of avoided CO2 emissions per year for MS6 and MS9 based gas turbines respectively). More indirectly, once the FlameSheet™ technology has been demonstrated to work in a real-life, full-scale environment, the potential CO2 emissions avoidance of the Dutch energy sector could raise to 17 million tons annually. As a result, this project significantly contributes and accelerates to the goals set out by the DEI+ hydrogen call as well as the overarching national and European climate and GHG reduction ambitions. More specifically, this project aims to demonstrate the application of hydrogen and green electrons as a fuel for energetic usage.
