Aanleiding
OCI has set ambitious sustainability targets to decarbonize its own operations, namely 20% GHG emission intensity reduction by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. At the same time, OCI intends to provide solutions for value chain decarbonizations in fuels, food, and feedstocks. They have set the ambition to develop a future for methanol that is independent from primary fossil fuels, which is also driven by current and expected high natural gas price in Northwest Europe. OCI aims to utilize its existing world scale methanol synthesis, distillation, storage tanks and logistics infrastructure while replacing the front-end natural gas based steam methane reformer (SMR) with innovative waste-based gasification technology. OCI believes that this approach can create a blueprint for transitioning existing fossil assets to a decarbonized future.

Doelstelling
The goal of this environmental and engineering study is to gain more insights in the technical feasibility, plant designs, efficiency, energy and heat balances and CO2-emission reduction of methanol production with gasification of currently non-recyclable waste streams. Additionally, the study will support the business case for the project and the production of bio-methanol and RFNBO methanol. Furthermore, the study will provide details on the expected greenhouse gas emission reduction and other environmental impact. This information is required to support the final investment decision within OCI as well as to support cost estimates for discussions with future off-takers of bio- and RFNBO methanol.

Korte omschrijving
During the environmental study a design of the plant will be made. This will provide an exact overview of the required processes and materials at a level of detail that allows an estimation of the cost of the implementation of the gasifiers. On the basis of a detailed design tailored to the technique, a reasonably accurate estimate of the CAPEX and OPEX will be made that allows the calculation of key financial indicators for the investment decision. Besides, the CO2-emission reduction will be calculated.

Resultaat
The intended result of the study is to enable a sound decision to be made for proceeding to the basic engineering phase and ultimately the demonstration of a zero-emission methanol plant. The plant will consist of gasification of currently non-recyclable waste streams to produce syngas to use in the existing methanol production line of BioMCN, replacing the steam methane reformer.
