Flare Replacement

Publieke samenvatting / Public summary

Aanleiding
Being one of the largest plastics producers globally, SABIC is committed to the decarbonization of plastic production. SABIC's decarbonization strategy includes the reduction of emissions from the installations at the Chemelot site. SABIC operates a flare installation on the Chemelot site. The flare is a necessary support installation that functions as a safety feature within Chemelot for several production plants. Flaring ensures that process gasses are safely discharged and burned during activities such as start-up, shutdowns and maintenance, or in case of process malfunctions or disruptions.

Doelstelling
The primary objective of this project is making SABIC's production more energy efficient by replacing the existing flare set-up with a more energy efficient alternative. The project is in line with SABIC's objectives to reduce overall emissions from its operations and provide a safe production environment.

Korte omschrijving
The project plan consists of an integrated approach in which design, engineering, implementation, and decommissioning are organized into three successive work packages: WP1. Detailed engineering and procurement WP2. Construction WP3. Commissioning Within WP1, detail engineering will set the design of the new flare, including foundations, concrete and steel structures, connections to existing infrastructures and utilities. Equipment will be ordered, and contractors will be contracted to perform the construction. The project will continue in WP2 with the realization of foundations and the construction of the flare's supporting structures and piping/connections. The new flare will be constructed and integrated within the necessary utilities and production infrastructures. Finally, in WP3, start-up and commissioning of the new flare installation will take place.

Resultaat
The results of the project on flare replacement reveal a reduction in energy consumption and 174 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. The reduction in both energy consumption and carbon emissions not only aligns with sustainability goals but also underscores the potential for adopting cleaner and more efficient solutions in the industrial sector. These results highlight the feasibility and environmental benefits of transitioning to more energy-efficient systems, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
