ECO-BASE

Publieke samenvatting / Public summary

Aanleiding
The Paris Agreement calls for greenhouse gas emission pathways consistent with keeping the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to imit the increase to 1.5 °C. Storing CO2 is an essential part of reaching this target and commercial utilization of CO2 is one of the foreseeable mechanisms to create a business case for the storage process. Out of the different utilization scenarios available at the moment CO2-EOR is the only one capable of continuously utilizing large volumes of carbon dioxide, creating a revenue stream and allowing smooth transition into permanent storage and deployment of large scale CCUS.

Doelstelling
The objective of the project is to support deployment of CCUS by screening the available data, developing CCUS roadmaps and preparing for CO2-EOR pilots in the SEE area. The project team will access the whole revenue stream and focus on optimization of the CO2-EOR combined with permanent CO2 storage (EORStore – Enhanced Oil Recovery with Storage) as a single, undividable process.

Korte omschrijving
ECO-BASE will access EORStore potential through the following activities: - For Romania, Turkey and Greece, create an inventory of CO2 sources (potential capture projects) and sinks (potential sites for geological storage and for CO2 utilization through enhanced oil production with permanent storage); - Perform EORStore case studies as a reference for country-wide EOR potential assessment, identify and prepare solid business cases and CCUS revenue streams; - Set up country-based roadmaps for CCS, with a key accelerator role for CO2-EOR; - Organize knowledge transfer workshops for local CCS stakeholders.

Resultaat
ECO-BASE aims to develop prospective revenue streams and business models for CO2-EOR in South-Eastern Europe (SEE) and therefore to support large scale CCUS deployment in the region.
