PCM4HEAT
Development of innovative PCM technology for novel Thermal Energy Storage solutions
Publieke samenvatting / Public summary
Aanleiding
The ideal way of decreasing TES buffer sizes by 2-5 times is by increasing the heat storage capacity of the buffer with the help of PCM. However, the ideal PCM should be optimized for a broad range of temperatures allowing a much better performance for different seasons and temperature fluctuation.
Doelstelling
The PCM4HEAT project aims to create a compact short-term (~12h) thermal storage using tailor-made PCMs, enabling efficient operation across a wide range of temperatures during the entire year, making heat storage more effective and reducing energy consumption, balancing the grid and supporting off-grid living.
Korte omschrijving
PCM4HEAT will develop a novel PCM technology for TES buffers with broad, multiple, or even switchable transition temperatures. This technology will enable efficient operation across a wide range of temperatures during the entire year, making heat storage more effective and reducing energy consumption. The technology will also have the potential to increase the COP of the heat pump, leading to the reduction of noise level and energy consumption of the heat pump. Additionally, the system is designed to significantly reduce the size of the buffer storage compared to traditional water-based systems.
Resultaat
The project will deliver a novel PCM-based technology for TES buffers with broad, multiple, or even switchable transition temperatures. The validation in the relevant environment using real-size buffer vessels and encompassing at least 100 cycles of the PCM system to confirm long-term stability.
