Compression Resorption

Publieke samenvatting / Public summary

New type of heat pump for broad application

Much residual heat in the industry is still disappearing in the air or water, because the temperature and pressure are too low to reuse in industrial processes. Heat pumps can be used to boost this residual energy to useful temperatures and pressures. Most heat pumps work on compression of gases or liquids. The use of wet gases makes it possible to also use low-temperature heat in industrial processes.

The project

Building on the results of previous research, an installation will be investigated in this project that works on a working medium of ammonia with water. This compression-resorption heat pump can upgrade residual heat with a temperature of about 80°C to usable heat at 150 to 170°C, at pressures of 1 to 15 bar.

For whom

There is great interest from the chemical industry for this type of process. A commercially available, reliable heat pump of this type can be used in many sectors.

What's new?

The mixture of ammonia and water works effectively in ranges of boiling and condensation temperatures that match the offered and desired temperatures, at relatively low pressure ratios, without risk of overheating and with high performance (Coefficient Of Performance, COP, from 3.5 to 5.5, depending on the processes). Compressing such working media is new. The first tests take place in a modified off-the-shelf compressed air compressor.

Another mixture that is tested also contains CO2 in addition to ammonia and water. This new mixture is being evaluated and has the potential to make this type of heat pump even more efficient.

Key points of research

The test setup will mainly focus on the operation of the compressor under the working conditions (supply and removal of heat) that apply in plants of the industrial project partners. The operation of the entire system of the heat pump is further examined in models.

Saving in this project

Approximately 115 PJ of thermal energy is used annually in Dutch industry at temperatures up to 170°C. Upgrading residual heat can cover the largest part of this energy demand.

Broad application

Application of this type of heat pump is seen in the broader perspective of potentially large savings on steam demand by upgrading residual heat with heat pumps.

Duration

01-09-2015 until 31-12-2019. In the spring of 2018, a measurement campaign of one and a half years will start.

Next steps

If the measurement campaign confirms the viability of this type of heat pump, according to the participating heat pump suppliers, a prototype will go through another test of about three years. Such a pilot is already being prepared.
