CO2 Capture from advanced steel production processes

Publieke samenvatting / Public summary

Aanleiding
Climate change and global warming are among the major environmental problems facing our society at present and in the future. This issue has stimulated the development of CO2 emission reduction technologies and in particular CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) which is particular useful for industrial CO2 emitters. CCS is needed to reach the goals set at the climate conference of the COP21 in December 2015:
- keeping the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels;
- limit the increase to 1.5°C, since this would significantly reduce risks and impacts of climate change.
Where for the production of electricity, renewables are being used more and more, reducing the CO2 footprint. With the production of steel there is still a lot to win by applying advanced CO2 capture technologies.

Korte omschrijving
The steel industry, and in particular TATA steel, are investing a lot in more advanced production processes and are looking for opportunities to combine this with the latest technology in CO2 capture.
This project investigates the integration options of the advanced HIsarna process with state of the art capture technologies including a techno economical evaluation of the integrated concept.
