Batch pyrolysis technology for a circular future

Publieke samenvatting / Public summary

Aanleiding
As is commonly known, plastic is one of the material foundations on which our society functions nowadays. In The Netherlands and Europe, large amounts of virgin plastics are being produced annually. Despite the maturity of mechanical recycling technology, only a small amount of this plastic is being processed in a sustainable manner after being discarded. Large amounts of waste plastics are still being incinerated and exported. The main reason is the complexity of the waste plastic streams, which make them impossible to recycle mechanically. Another limitation is that mechanically recycled plastics generally cannot be used in the applications that generate the largest volumes of plastic waste, such as food packaging and medical-grade products. Therefore, viable and operational chemical recycling plants must be built in order to aid in these problems. Easier said than done, as currently many entities are struggling to operate their pyrolysis plants successfully. Due to VPR's approach, VPR believes they hold the key to viable, operational and robust chemical recycling.

Doelstelling
The goal of the project is the realization of a large-scale pyrolysis plant with the proven technology of VPR. This way, VPR can significantly contribute to the circular economy of The Netherlands, reducing its carbon footprint and securing its place in the world as recycling hub.

Korte omschrijving
The first activities within this project will be engineering of the process and requesting the permits. Subsequently, the plant will be constructed and installed. A testing period will follow where the last bottlenecks will be overcome before the plant can run at full capacity and commercially.

Resultaat
The project will help VPR achieve its goal of more sustainable production at their Rotterdam site and advance The Netherlands' circular economy by lowering its carbon footprint and strengthening its role as a recycling hub. In the long term it can also help the rest of Europe to manage their plastic waste in a sustainable and circular manner. The concrete result of this project will be a commercially viable, operational large-scale pyrolysis plant.
