Band Offset selective Barrier Three Terminal perovskite on silicon high efficiency Tandem Solar Cell

Publieke samenvatting / Public summary

Aanleiding
The multijunction design is the attractive means to increase silicon solar cell efficiency which is reaching its single junction limits. Two terminal (2T) and four terminal (4T) designs have yielded the best results but suffer challenges due to tunnel junctions (2T) and grid alignment (4T).

Korte omschrijving
The BobTandem project proposes a new three terminal recently patented design. This yields tandem efficiencies without tunnel junctions and grid alignment issues using selective band offset barriers. These prevent majority carrier transport from the high bandgap cell to the lower bandgap cell, while allowing minority carriers to be collected. The result is the collection of current at different potentials from top and bottom bandgap cells.

Resultaat
The project will develop processes routing to integrate a high bandgap perovskite solar cell (PSC) on a interdigitated back contact cell (IBC). The project includes leading researchers in PSCs who are at the origin of the concept, and leading IBC partners who are managing mass production of the ZEBRA IBC cell in 2019. These are brought together with the recently patented SBOB concept which has been independently demonstrated in the field of infra-red detectors.
